The Financial Mathematics and Statistics B.S. is a joint major between the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Statistics and Applied Probability, in cooperation with the Department of Economics. This degree is a good fit for you if you would like to learn how mathematics, probability, and statistics play a key role in pricing and hedging securities in the financial markets. In the past decade the Department has undergone a major transformation towards new data-driven initiatives, and plays a major role in the UCSB data science initiative. In response to a surging student interest in computational methods and data analytics we are developing a range of new courses and programs. The Department also hosts the Center for Financial Mathematics and Actuarial Research (CFMAR) which plays an international leadership role in quantitative finance, actuarial predictive analytics and stochastic modeling. We also provide consulting services through the DataLab. In 2022, the Society of Actuaries designated the Department as a Center of Actuarial Excellence, making UCSB the only university with this designation in California.
