To be eligible for admission, applicants need only hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. ​Students educated outside the United States must present proof of English proficiency. For full admission, the Mathematics Education program requires a minimum TOEFL score of 96 on the TOEFL iBT, 243 on the computer-based test, or 590 on the paper-based test. A minimum of 7.5 on the IELTS may be submitted for this requirement.​ Before enrolling in Mathematics Education courses, students must first demonstrate proficiency in Precalculus. This can be done either by scoring sufficiently high on the mathematics placement exam or by having earned a grade of B or higher in at least two Calculus classes.

The purpose of the Master of Arts in Mathematics Education program is to improve the quality of mathematics instruction in schools in the greater-Chicago area and to offer a response to the shortage of secondary school mathematics teachers. The program is designed so that it can be completed by in-service teachers at the rate of two courses per quarter. Students also have the option to proceed through the program at a slower pace depending on their individual needs. The main emphasis of the program is mathematics content, but significant time is also spent on methods of incorporating new teaching strategies and technologies in the classroom.
