The beginning of the twenty-first century will be remembered for dramatic and rapid technological advances in automation, instrumentation, and the internet. One consequence of these technological advances is the proliferation of massively large data sets and data streams. There's enormous potential for extracting new information and insights from these data. Data science has grown from statistics and computer science to meet these challenges. It's a hugely interesting, rapidly changing, and profitable area for mathematicians. There is, and will be a shortage of data scientists for years to come. At the University of Montana, we teach data science from the ground up. We begin with the foundations and theory, progress to methods, and close with projects courses. Classes are small and you'll work closely with some of the foremost educators in the field. It's a great place to learn, live, and launch your career.<br><br>The Master of Science Program aims to provide students with a background in the foundations and principles of data science and the practical application of data science methods. The Department of Mathematical Sciences M.S. Program corresponds to the traditional mathematics option of the department's M.A. in Mathematics option. Candidates for admission to the Master of Science degree program should have an undergraduate mathematics minor and at least one course in computer programming. In addition to meeting the general Graduate School requirements, as set forth in the University's Graduate Bulletin, the M.S. candidate must fulfill departmental requirements as outlined below. Each student will have an advisor who must approve the individual's course of study. The department's Graduate Committee initially assigns an advisor. Students may apply to the Committee for a change of advisor.
