Candidates in this program must currently have (or complete during their program) a master's degree in mathematics equivalent to the MS/MA degree or the MS-MTCH degree at Portland State University.

RECOMMENDATION LETTERS
Required - You will be required to enter the names and email addresses for three references. Recommendation letters should come from a professional or academic reference who can comment on your ability to do graduate work and your teaching potential. You do not need to enter additional references if applying for a GA position.

PERSONAL STATEMENT
Required - You will be required to upload a professional portfolio that includes: (a.) one page statement of your experience in teaching or tutoring mathematics at the school or college level, (b.) a written statement that includes personal and professional goals in mathematics education, philosophy of teaching and learning mathematics, and reasons for applying to this Ph.D. program in mathematics education, and (c.) a sample of previous work that demonstrates potential for creative and independent work necessary to success in the Ph.D. Mathematics Education program.

If applying for a GA position, you will also be required to upload a statement describing your background in mathematics/statistics, and previous teaching, tutoring, and/or grading experiences. This is the same as part (a.) of the professional portfolio.

Applicants who have earned 9 or more letter-graded graduate credits must have a minimum graduate GPA of 3.0 or the equivalent, this graduate GPA supersedes the undergraduate GPA.

IELTS - 6.5 overall score with minimum sub-scores of 6.5 in reading and writing
TOEFL iBT - minimum overall score of 80 with minimum subscores of 18 in reading and writing
