Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities. ECU's athletic training program covers orthopedic assessment, pharmacology, evidence-based medicine, rehabilitative and therapeutic modalities as well as medical conditions affecting the active population. Additionally, majors have a clinical class each semester that is based on problem-solving and differential diagnoses. Each class builds on the material previously learned and continually challenges students to diagnose medical conditions and return-to-play decisions in the best interest of the athlete. The challenging program also requires 200 clinical hours each semester supervised by certified and licensed athletic trainers. Skills learned in the classroom and reinforced in lab can be practiced on athletes while under the supervision of preceptors at local high schools and with ECU Pirate athletics.
