​Sitting behind a desk, pushing a pencil, and negotiating business deals aren't everybody's dream of landing the perfect job. If you are the type of person who craves fresh air, adventure, and a close relationship with the natural environment, then outdoor recreation may be the career for you. As an outdoor recreation professional, you may work in a variety of areas including camps, outdoor or environmental education programs, parks, and adventure programs. Although you will likely work in an outdoor setting, you will often perform administrative duties such as planning and supervising the work of others. You may work with children, adults, community groups, families and people with disabilities.​ ​If you love the outdoors, feel connected to the environment and enjoy educating people, you can turn that passion into a career in outdoor recreation. CMU outdoor and environmental recreation students combine class and fieldwork to prepare for careers in parks, protected areas, camps, and outdoor or environmental education programs — including at national parks or adventure programs. A minor and a required internship enhance your leadership skills, such as planning and supervising others.
