A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution, or a comparable degree from an international institution, with a minimum 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) grade point average (GPA) in all coursework attempted while enrolled as an upper-division undergraduate student working towards a bachelor's degree
Personal Statement. Upload a 2-3 page statement that highlights relevant training and experiences, your sociological interests and career goals, and why our department is the right place for you to continue your education.
Academic Writing Sample. “Upload a copy of a sole-authored paper, such as an undergraduate course paper, an honor’s thesis, Master’s thesis, or publication. The paper should showcase your writing abilities, demonstrate critical thinking skills, and reveal your potential to succeed in our graduate program.
Transcripts. Upload a copy (unofficial is fine) of undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
Recommendation Letters. Provide the contact information of three academics who have agreed to write letters of recommendation. We will email them instructions about how to upload their letters. If you have been out of college for an extended period of time and cannot secure three academics, contact us for further guidance.
GRE and/or TOEFL Scores. Upload copies (unofficial copy is fine) of your GRE scores. International students must also upload copies of TOEFL scores (minimum of 550 paper, 213 computer, or 80 Internet based).
International English Language Testing System (Academic IELTS): 6.5

The Department of Sociology offers graduate degree programs leading to the Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. The department's primary objective is to enable students in our graduate programs to become scholars who are able to conduct high-quality, innovative research and to provide the education and training that will serve as a basis for independent or collaborative research, depending on the individual graduate's professional goals. Our graduates typically secure jobs as professors at research universities and liberal arts colleges or as researchers in non-profits and government agencies. The Master of Science in Applied Social Research and Master of Science in Sociology with a Major in Aging and Health may be completed in one calendar year if entered in the Fall semester. Requirements for the degrees as well as other rules and procedures are listed in the Guide to Graduate Studies in Sociology, a document that is updated as changes are made in the program.<br><br>Our Inequalities and Social Justice area offers courses focusing on gender, sexuality, race and ethnicity, education and social class, work and family, organizational dynamics, interactional processes, politics, media, critical race theory, social movements, gender and development, and an overview inequalities and social justice course. Ten of our faculty are affiliated with this area of concentration: Buggs, Davis, Padavic, Reynolds, Rohlinger, Sanyal, Schrock, Singh, Ueno, and Waggoner. They have published on issues ranging from abortion politics, Black Lives Matter, politics, women’s movements, and democratic processes in India, the trans community, the Flint, MI water crisis, racial, gendered, and sexual inequalities in workplace and educational contexts, and political, cultural, embodied processes surrounding reproduction.
