As a student in our journalism program, youll experience a broad-based liberal arts education combined with an array of skills and theory courses. Our students have a high degree of success in obtaining internships and professional positions through our vast network of alumni (approximately 5,000 journalism and public relations) and organizations such as the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association. A journalism major will prepare you to work in a multimedia and multicultural environment, practice ethics in communication and maintain the professional standards of journalism. Journalism, the collection and distribution of news and information, is an essential field in any democratic society. Journalists are involved in managing, editing or writing for newspapers, magazines and online, radio and television news outlets. They also are involved in advertising and public relations. NIU's journalism program is housed in the Department of Communication. Courses in writing, photography, layout, electronic media and broadcasting will equip you with the skills to gather, evaluate and disseminate information. You also will learn about ethics, professional standards and the critical role of the mass media in society.
