The average WMU freshman has a 3.4 cumulative high school GPA on a 4-point scale with a composite score of 23 on the ACT or an 1090 on the SAT. TOEFL Score: 61 iBT, 500 PBT, IELTS Score: 6.0 and above.

Western Michigan University's journalism program provides students training in Associated Press-style writing and focuses on investigative multimedia journalism. It combines a liberal arts background with professional training, and is designed to prepare informed and responsible journalists to assume the challenging role demanded of them in the 21st century. As a journalism student at WMU, you will gain a thorough background in news reporting and writing, journalism law and journalism ethics. You will learn communication theory, journalism research, feature and article writing, reviewing for the press, newspaper writing and reporting, reporting public affairs, broadcast journalism, literary journalism, mass communication and news, and documentary in film and television.
