All applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited U.S. institution or equivalent degree. The degree will typically be in the field of philosophy. Admission, sometimes provisional on taking some make-up courses, may be granted to promising applicants without undergraduate degrees in philosophy. A personal statement describing the applicant's reasons for pursuing graduate study in philosophy at The University of Montana. We offer a unique degree, so the letter should explain carefully why the University of Montana is the right fit for their interests.
Three letters of recommendation.
A writing sample that demonstrates the applicant's philosophical abilities. A sample with environmental content is preferred, though not required.
Official transcripts from the applicant's undergraduate institution(s).
A 1-2 page resume highlighting certificates, awards, presentations, and other biographical experiences that demonstrate your skills and interests.
For applicants whose native language is not English, the applicant must have a minimum TOEFL IBT (IBT Home Edition also accepted) 80, IELTS - 6.5

Our environmental philosophy M.A. is the most applied philosophy graduate degree in the nation. It takes advantage of the department's scholarly expertise in wilderness issues, Thoreau, animal studies, philosophy of ecology, synthetic biology, gender and environment, aesthetics, climate ethics, moral theory, and the Anthropocene. It also involves field trips to Yellowstone National Park and the tribally operated Bison Range, an internship with an environmental organization, and a capstone project in an engaged philosophy topic of your choice. We want students to leave here with skills, both philosophical and practical. <br><br>We have a distinctive program designation from the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. This means we offer something unique in the Western U.S.. A prospective graduate student who is a resident of a Western state can enroll at 150% of Montana's in-state tuition. The Western states covered by this agreement include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.<br><br>A Master's degree in environmental philosophy can stand on its own or provide valuable preparation for a Ph.D. in philosophy, law school, public policy work, non-profit advocacy, or environmental writing, analysis, and consulting. World-class faculty with environmental expertise in a wide range of disciplines teach elsewhere across campus, making UM an exciting place to study environmental philosophy.
