The Spanish major requires 36 semester hours of study comprised of language, culture, literature, and professional applications of Spanish. Majors are strongly encouraged to study abroad and are required to complete a Spanish-language internship, either domestically or abroad. Study and internship opportunities are available in Costa Rica through our partnership with the locally-based company Language that Works. Spanish majors must also complete a minor in a secondary field of study, although they may choose to pursue a double major or dual degree instead.The Spanish minor requires 24 semester hours of study which are focused on developing all four essential language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.The Department of World Languages and Cultures offers a B.A. in Foreign Languages. A student may choose a focus language of French, German, Russian, or Spanish, and may also concentrate in Foreign Language and International Trade or pursue teaching certification. Arabic and Japanese cannot be taken as majors or minors, but can be taken to satisfy the language requirement for the B.A. degree or as electives. Certificate programs are available in our four major languages and may also be available in Arabic and Japanese depending on current course offerings.
