UW-Madison’s Chinese Literature and Culture program is one of the leading programs in North America. Professors Rania Huntington and Anatoly Detwyler mentor students in many eras and genres of traditional and modern literature and culture. Training is especially strong in Ming and Qing narrative and drama, literature of the supernatural, memory in literature, translation, modern and contemporary literary culture and film, and modern Western methodologies ranging from canonical theory to cultural analytics. The faculty value close interaction with graduate students in research projects and in regular informal discussions. The program has also sponsored the journal Chinese Literature: Essays, Articles, Reviews (CLEAR) since its inception in 1979.<br><br>The Ph.D.s who have graduated from our literature and culture program since its inception in the early 1960s have been provided the kind of solid background in texts and theory to produce strong scholarship. Recent graduates have accepted academic positions (tenure track and lecturers) in a variety of noted institutions in the U.S. and abroad, including Georgia Tech, Rhodes College, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Utah State University, Dickinson College, Columbia University, Princeton University, Vilanova University, St. Joseph’s University, and Duke-Kunshan.
