The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures offers five major-level concentrations:<br><br>French and Francophone Studies<br>German Studies<br>Global Languages and Communities<br>Applied Languages: French K-12 Teaching Licensure<br>Applied Languages: Spanish K-12 Teaching Licensure<br>Courses are also available in Arabic, Japanese, and Korean, as well as minors in American Sign Language, Chinese, Russian, and Spanish. Students may declare a minor or a second major while pursuing their first major. Through classroom study and firsthand experiences, you learn about today's interconnected world through the lens of global languages and their corresponding literatures and cultures.<br><br>The department offers a wide variety of co-curricular events that promote global awareness and cross-cultural understanding, including film screenings and cultural activities.<br>The department participates in foreign language studies consortia within the University of North Carolina distance education system, UNC Online and the Language Exchange, as well as interdisciplinary programs throughout the College of Arts and Sciences.<br>Faculty receive regional, national, and international recognition and have received prestigious campus- and nation-wide teaching awards.<br>Faculty have received research grants allowing them to pursue literary, cultural, and linguistic study that they share in the classroom.
