To be eligible, an applicant must hold or expect to hold prior to matriculation a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university, or an equivalent degree from a recognized non-U.S. institution of higher education. At minimum, the applicant needs to demonstrate above average academic performance (B average, usually a 3.0 on a 1.0-4.0 scale) for undergraduate course work and for any post-baccalaureate or graduate course work.Students are admitted to advanced degree programs by Graduate Division in the fall and spring semesters only. Outreach College does not fulfill the degree requirement for number of semesters ''in residence.'' Students who wish to take course work at the graduate level during a summer session, but who have not been admitted to an advanced degree program before that session begins, must register as ''post-baccalaureate unclassified'' (PBU) students

International applicants: TOEFL score. The minimum TOEFL score required for acceptance at UHM is 100 on the IBT, lower scores above 61 will be considered on a case by case basis. Students who are admitted with TOEFL scores between 61-100 will be required to attend courses in the English Language Institute, in addition to all Asian Studies Program requirements.

The Asian Studies Department offers two Masters level graduate programs the Master of Arts in Asian Studies (MAAS) and the Master's in Asian International Affairs (MAIA) as well as Graduate Certificates in Asian Studies and each of the geographical areas covered by SPAS area centers.<br>Asian Studies espouses an area studies approach, in which students are encouraged to use a variety disciplinary approaches to gain a more holistic understanding of Asia or geographical and cultural regions within Asia.
