The French and Italian Division in the Department of Languages and Literatures of Europe and the Americas (LLEA) offers language instruction in French and Italian at the beginning and intermediate levels. Advanced courses in composition, conversation, structure, translation, business, and linguistics are also offered in French. Courses in the literatures of France, Francophone Africa, the Francophone New World, and the Francophone Pacific are offered in the original language. Cultural studies courses designed to acquaint students from other fields with the traditions and cultures of Europe and the Americas are also available, both in English and in the target language, and advanced courses in specialized topics have been designed for students at the graduate level.The Certificate consists of 15 credits beyond intermediate level. Native and near-native speakers should consult a French Division advisor to determine which courses they may take. On completing the certificate, students will be able to demonstrate a substantial knowledge of spoken and written French. They will also have the opportunity to develop a reading knowledge of classic French authors in the original.
