Our graduate programs compare favorably with the best in the nation, combining a broad foundation in the archives of the field with training in specialized approaches to specific topics at both the master's and doctoral level. Our large group of research-active faculty offer graduate students opportunities to explore a wide range of critical approaches and areas of research. Courses provide a solid base for self-directed research, supported by faculty whose own work is marked by originality, rigor, and cross-disciplinary engagement. We foster a friendly and supportive environment in which graduate students work collaboratively with one another and with faculty. Our faculty interact with students, both in the classroom and in less formal venues, and graduate students acquire extensive experience teaching in all areas of their fieldfrom basic language courses through introductory courses in their particular areas of research.
