The Hispanic Studies Department offers a wide variety of programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels and provides plentiful opportunities for experiential learning. Our students have many opportunities to study the Spanish language and experience Hispanic cultures through study abroad. In recent years, undergraduates in Hispanic Studies have been involved in celebrating Dia de los Muertos and Chicana/Chicano Festival de Artes, and have participated in UNC's World Language Day, Spanish poetry contests and Sigma Delta Pi, the national honor society. Students develop a functional proficiency in the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and an appreciation and understanding of the civilization and culture of the Hispanic world. Students become functionally proficient in the Spanish language with a broad understanding and knowledge of the civilization and culture of the Spanish-speaking world.
