Three years of the chosen language and, for Chinese language students, one additional year of classical Chinese or the demonstrated equivalent. Students not meeting this prerequisite may be admitted with deficiencies provided they achieve this level of proficiency outside the minimum of 30 graduate hours required for their degree, and
Two lecture courses dealing with East Asia.
Regular admission requires a bachelor's degree and a grade-point average of at least a B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale)

- A Statement of Purpose explaining your academic objectives. Please describe the research interests and goals that you intend to pursue in light of specific strengths that can be found among the faculty at KU.
- A writing sample that demonstrates your writing skills and basic research capacity. A research paper from a previous upper-level undergraduate course will suffice.
- Name and email of three qualified individuals, preferably recent professors, who will provide a Letter of Recommendation.
- Transcripts from all institutions from which a degree was obtained and from all institutions attended post-bachelor's. *
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores.
Graduation with a baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited U.S. institution of higher education, or from such an institution in an English-speaking country where the medium of instruction is English. This option is not sufficient, however, to be appointed as a Graduate Teaching Assistant. Official TOEFL or IELTS scores must be submitted to be considered for Graduate Assistant funding opportunities.
- Submitting results of the ibTOEFL examination taken no more than two years prior to the semester of admission. A minimum score of 20 in Reading, Listening, and Writing is required for Regular Admission. A minimum score of 22 on the Speaking section is required for Graduate Teaching Assistant eligibility. IELTS scores will also suffice to prove English proficiency. Please contact the department for further information.
