The department is known for its strong history of high quality research, teaching, and service. When the applied arm of the American Psychology Society (APS), the American Association of Applied and Preventive Psychology, was established in 1994, the UNO psychology department was one of the first departments to receive accreditation in applied psychology. Further evidence for the quality of the department comes from its history of attracting external funding to support faculty research.<br><br>The overall training goal of the department's graduate program is to produce well-trained applied scientists who, depending on their career goals, are capable of assisting clinical psychologists and working as a mental health professional (MS objective) or teaching, conducting research, and providing professional service delivery (Ph.D. objective). Regardless of the degree objective, students have substantial contact with faculty through classes, graduate committees, and other formal and informal departmental activities. The size and collaborative nature of our faculty ensures that students will have the opportunity to interact with nearly all of the faculty members in the department. We offer a Master of Science and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Applied Psychology. Students may apply for either the MS in psychology or the Ph.D. in psychology program. Both MS and PhD students will earn a MS degree, however the terminal MS students do not complete a thesis. Students applying to the Ph.D. program will choose one of two areas of concentration, Applied Developmental Psychology or Applied Biopsychology.
