The BA in Elementary Education focuses on preparing candidates to serve students from kindergarten through the 6th grade. The program prepares candidates in pedagogy, classroom and behavior management, assessment, and working with students from diverse backgrounds. The program is approved by Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the Alabama State Department of Education and leads to an ALSDE Class B in Elementary Education (K-6). The Department of Curriculum and Instruction collaborates with the College of Arts, Humanities, & Social Sciences, the College of Science, and local schools to offer undergraduate teacher preparation programs that combine a broad liberal education base and professional studies that are content-rich with diverse field experiences integrated into all coursework. Several options for graduate certification are also offered. The Master of Education program is available for teachers already certified at the baccalaureate level and seeking advanced-level certification. A Master of Arts in Teaching program is also available for individuals seeking initial certification. Students may also opt to pursue a graduate certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorders.
