The department offers a comprehensive program on the study of Central Eurasia, the vast heartland of Europe and Asia. Students are introduced to the area as a whole and specialize in one of the major regions within Central Eurasia. The degree program consists of two interconnected elements: a language of specialization, which gives a student access to the culture of a given region through the voices of its people, and a region of specialization, which includes courses on various aspects of the region's culture. The language of specialization may be any language offered regularly in the department, including Estonian, Finnish, Hungarian, Mongolian, Persian, Tibetan, Turkish, Uyghur, Uzbek, and other two-year department languages permitted by the student's Graduate Advisory Committee.
