In this concentration, the concept of borders is interpreted broadly to include any boundaries that shape relations between and amongst identities, cultures, genders, ethnic groups, states, and regions. While the term ''diaspora'' once referred only to the relocation of Jews to regions outside of Palestine, it now refers to dispersion of any cultural group from its traditional ''homeland.'' Students will understand these concepts broadly, and they will also have the chance to focus on specific regions and groups including the U.S.-Mexico border region, urban communities, Middle Eastern ethnic religious minorities, the African diaspora, Native peoples of the Southwest, and Chicana women.
