NYU's Master of Arts in Museum Studies program offers a unique interdisciplinary academic foundation in museum history and practice. Consisting of coursework, research, and a required internship, the MA program provides a well-rounded look at museums with the ability to center a focus on a particular discipline in art, history, science, or any other field. The program's knowledgeable faculty and adjunct faculty and its network of dedicated alumni help students expand their careers and experiences both inside and outside of the classroom.<br><br>The Master of Arts degree requires completion of 32 points, of which at least 24 must be within the Program in Museum Studies. Students must complete five core courses. Three core courses provide an understanding of the historical and theoretical ground of current museum practice, both nationally and internationally: History and Theory of Museums, a focused introduction to the creation of exhibitions and the management of collections; Museum Collections and Exhibitions; and Museum Management, a comprehensive account of the administrative, strategic, and financial aspects of museum management. Students also enroll in the Museum Studies Research Seminar, write an MA thesis of approximately 50 pages, and complete a project-based, 200-hour internship in a museum or appropriate cultural institution.
