Letters of evaluation
Three reference letters are required for each applicant. The names and contact information (only) must be submitted through the online process initiated through your application.
GRE Scores
Rice University requires all applicants to provide GRE (Graduate Record Examination) General Test scores. The scores must not be more than five years old, and an official copy must be sent to Rice University directly from the Educational Testing Service. Personal copies are not acceptable.
Personal statement
Provide a personal statement specifying the program you are applying to (M.Arch. Option 1 or 2, M.A. in Architecture Option 3) and articulating why you are drawn to Rice Architecture (what experiences have prepared you and what ambitions you have for your potential graduate studies).
The minimum GPA is 3.0 for applicants applying to the Master of Architecture and Master of Arts in Architecture programs. We require one copy of the official, confidential transcript from every institution (undergraduate and graduate) that you have attended.
In general, applicants should have at least a 3.0(B) grade point average (or the equivalent) in their undergraduate work. Some departments at Rice University require scores on the aptitude portion of the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) or the GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test) as an appropriate advanced test, these should be sent directly to the admitting department. Applicants whose native language is not English must take the TOEFL test and score at least 600 on the paper-based TOEFL, score at least 250 on the computer-based TOEFL, or score 100 on the Internet-based TOEFL. For students who choose to take the IELTS in lieu of TOEFL, the minimum score is 7. The minimum required GPA is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
