The Smart Cities course will help you to understand the current issues for urban living and development and highlight opportunities in delivering smart cities, drawing on different technologies, policies and practices. This course will introduce you to social-ecological systems that aim to better understand current challenges and give you an insight into the social, economic and environmental factors that interconnect in complex ways. Digital platforms such as BIM (Building Information Modelling) and interactive virtual reality, environmental and social appraisal techniques and participatory approaches will feature as useful tools to aid decision-making and urban planning to create attractive smart cities. <br><br>The course is structured around a built environment challenge that requires interdisciplinary thinking and planning. In order to develop and implement sustainable solutions for 21st century cities, you will study urban environment dynamics and become more aware of its drivers and influencing factors such as culture, economic interests, regulatory requirements and technological opportunities. The course will start with an overview of the different built environment professions from a practitioner viewpoint, sharing real life situations, approaches and solutions. During the three weeks, the lectures, seminars and project-based work will help you develop your skills and knowledge of useful strategies, approaches and techniques of urban planning and development, and a wider understanding of the construction sector and real estate operations. Under the guidance of your tutors, you will undertake research on your project in your assigned groups and apply the knowledge, concepts and methods you will have learned in class to reach a group solution to the challenge. You will be given support and feedback throughout the course, culminating in an opportunity to practice your presentation and language skills with each group presenting their specific project ‘solution' and findings before a panel of judges made up of tutors and other university staff.
