Any student who wishes to apply for a degree must hold an undergraduate degree, submit an online application with transcript, at least two letters of recommendation, a current statement of professional goals (1-2 pages), and at least one of the options listed below. It is possible to apply up to 6 graduate credits toward a degree with advisor approval but coursework must be no older than five years at degree completion. All other University of Virginia course work must be earned after admission to the degree program. Students are responsible for knowing the requirements for admission to, and completion of, the master's degree. They are also responsible for contacting their advisor upon admission.

Paper-based TOEFL: 600
Computer-Based TOEFL: 250
IELTS: 7.0
IBT TOEFL: at least 22 in writing, 22 in speaking, 23 in reading, and 23 in listening for a total score of 90.
