The Master of Science in education with an emphasis in curriculum and instruction provides practicing teachers with the opportunity to develop deeper and broader understandings of the challenges of teaching and learning in today's diverse schools. In addition, individuals studying within the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior who work in other educational settings, such as museums, may also deepen their understanding of issues related to curriculum and instruction. This program, offered within the Department of Teaching and Learning, draws on the many areas of expertise of the curriculum and instruction faculty and offers opportunities for learning that can help students grow in their abilities to become leaders in their professions. At SIUE, students may customize their degree plans to meet their career needs. An area of emphasis offers many possibilities for study: Particular subject area, like literacy, math, science or social studies, Particular age groups, such as early childhood, elementary, middle school, high school or adult education and Professional issues, such as curriculum development, differentiated instruction, assessment of student learning, teacher inquiry or teacher leadership. <br><br>The Department of Historical Studies, in cooperation with the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior offers a history teaching field specialization as part of the Master of Science in Education (MSEd) in curriculum and instruction. A jointly advised program ordinarily including 15 hours in history will be designed, taking into account each student's background and interests. Throughout the program, the student must consult with the history graduate advisor before registering for any courses in history. Upon completion of the program, students must have accumulated at least 42 semester hours in history (graduate and undergraduate work combined). Students admitted to the program with less than 27 hours of acceptable undergraduate work will be required to complete more than 15 graduate hours in history in order to satisfy degree requirements. A student must achieve a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the history teaching field, as well as an overall GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
