Cleveland State University's Elementary and Secondary Education (Advanced and Applied Teaching) specialization is intended to provide in-service teachers with a curriculum sequence strongly connected to the context of their classroom practice. The focus on advancing teaching skills relies on up-to-date principles of effective teaching, learning, and assessment in urban, diverse educational settings. The specialization combines hands-on applications of student-centered pedagogy with tenets of reflective teaching. Built around a common College Core, specialized coursework in conflict resolution, data-driven classroom instruction, and classroom management is integrated with required classes in educational research, social issues impacting education in the 21st century, educational psychology, as well as academic content-specific methods.
