A baccalaureate (bachelor's) degree, requiring four years of full-time study or equivalent, or masters degree from a college or university holding full regional or national accreditation. Official transcripts from every previous college (U.S. and international) attended should be sent directly from the institution to the Department of Information and Library Science. Students enrolled in their Bachelor's degree may apply. We require an official transcript for the application – and then a final transcript showing the degree granted once available. Three letters of reference, Resume/CV, Personal Goals Essay. GRE or GMAT scores are required for all Ph.D. applicants. All non-native English speakers must be proficient in English. Many of our students score 100 or above for TOEFL, 7.0 or above for IELTS, and 120 or above for Duolingo.

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Information Science at IU Bloomington is one of the oldest, continuously running information science doctoral programs in the nation. Our mission is to train the next generation of information scientistsprofessionals who want to understand, predict, and advance the ways in which people use information systems and communication technologies. The Ph.D. in Information Science is designed to prepare you for research and teaching in academia. Your core requirements will help you develop a strong understanding of the research process and what constitutes scholarly research. Youll also learn to identify and conceptualize significant research problems so that you may undertake new research initiatives and contribute new knowledge to the field.
