The physics graduate program at CMU offers a unique opportunity for students to engage in cutting-edge research without a commitment to many years of graduate work typically required for a doctorate in physics. With a student-to-faculty ratio of two-to-one, all students have an opportunity to engage in either theoretical or experimental work. As a graduate student in the physics program, you'll work side-by-side with faculty and engage in experimental research work and obtain hands-on skills in laser spectroscopy, magnetic resonance, rheology, thin films, polymer fluid dynamics and X-ray diffraction labs.<br><br>All students admitted to the program are supported on a teaching or research assistantship that includes full tuition support. Because the majority of faculty members have external grants that support graduate student research, most students receive financial support not only during the academic year, but also throughout the summer.
