Chemistry often is considered the liberal arts degree of the technical world and serves as an integral component of modern research in medicine, the environment, new materials and energy technology. Chemists study the atomic and molecular properties of materials and evaluate the subsequent reactions. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers a master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees in chemistry. Students also can pursue an accelerated master's program to start logging graduate level coursework while still completing a TU undergraduate degree. The thesis program is strongly recommended for those planning to pursue graduate study at the Ph.D. level and for those intending to pursue research-oriented employment. By the end of the first semester, the student should select a research area and a thesis advisor who will supervise the research and the remainder of the student's course work.
