Preference is given to candidates with undergraduate majors in chemistry or chemical engineering including mathematics through calculus. GRE only for graduates of non-U.S. universities, with advanced test, strongly recommended.

Language Proficiency

Required scores on the Internet-based (iBT) and Computer-based TOEFL:

An overall score of 80 or above (82 for teaching assistantship consideration), AND Minimum scores in the following areas: Reading: 19; Writing: 18; Listening: 17; Speaking: 18 (the suggested minimum speaking score for a teaching assistantship is 20).

Other scores that may be accepted in place of TOEFL scores (please check with your department):

International English Language Testing System (IELTS): All scores must be sent directly to URI. Required minimum score of 6.5, AND minimum scores in the following areas: Reading: 6.5; Writing: 6.5; Listening: 6.5; Speaking: 6.5 (The suggested minimum speaking score for a teaching assistantship is 7).

Duolingo English Test: Required minimum score of 105 (Score of 110 for a teaching assistantship)

Pearson Test of English: Required minimum scores are Reading 53, Writing 59, Listening 47, and Speaking 47 (62 for international teaching assistants)

Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR): Required minimum score of B2

Develop the skills needed to conduct specialized laboratory research in preparation for careers in highly competitive chemical and biological industries. Chemistry is the enabling science in a diverse cross-section of modern fields of research that range from fundamental to applied and includes catalysis, nanotechnology, renewable energy, materials and forensic chemistry. The Department of Chemistry at URI delivers the classic curriculum of a liberal arts education in chemistry at the undergraduate and graduate levels with an emphasis on the tools required of researchers in the most modern sectors of the field.<br>Research is the heart of graduate education in chemistry. In the first year of their PhD studies, students will join a research group and begin performing experimentation at the leading edge of their disciplines. The Department of Chemistry is home to faculty in the traditional chemistry disciplines: analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. Most research programs at URI are interdisciplinary, allowing students to become well-versed in multiple fields of study as they work to become leaders in their fields.
