The Ball State Department of Geological Sciences has a primary mission to provide teaching, research, and service in support of the University's Strategic Plan. The Department's teaching mission provides professional geoscience training for students at the bachelor's and master's levels and interdisciplinary training at the doctoral level in support of the PhD in Environmental Science. Our graduates make a strong contribution to industry, government, and education in the State of Indiana and nationwide. Geological Science instruction also plays a significant role in Ball State general education offerings in science and international affairs, and contributes to the training of majors in allied areas such as geography and environmental management. The Department of Geological Sciences research mission has a regional to global focus in a broad range of sub-disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas. A significant part of the research mission is to seek external funding for ongoing projects. Ball State geoscientists are expected to publish and present the results of their research to the scientific community at large. In service, Geological Science faculty members are active in a broad range of professional societies and take leadership roles when needed. Geological Science faculty members are strongly encouraged to participate in Ball State faculty governance, and engage in geoscience community outreach.master of science option-a two-year program that includes a research thesis and culminates in the traditional graduate degree for professional work in your desired sub-discipline of the geologic sciences.
