The M.Sc. in Civil Engineering provides training in advanced topics in civil engineering. The programme has been tailored to meet the needs of the civil engineering sector, which requires graduates with high-level skills in design, analysis and communication. In addition, the course is designed to fulfil the requirements of Engineers Ireland for a Master's degree in an engineering discipline as the minimum educational standard for Chartered Engineer status. The accreditation process for this new programme will proceed in the normal way. Graduates of the programme are highly employable, both nationally and internationally, across numerous civil engineering sub discipline areas including environmental and energy engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, water resources engineering, engineering for sustainability, and construction management.<br>The programme spans a single academic year (three semesters) and requires full time attendance on campus.<br>The programme outline is provided below. For the first two semesters students will study a mandatory set of core subjects and a suite of optional advanced subjects (technical and non-technical electives). Students will engage in a single research project over all three semesters with submission of a research project (thesis) at the end of semester 3.<br>Research in the School focuses on a wide range of challenges across society where civil engineers contribute solutions and knowledge generation in the areas of environmental and energy engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water and waste water engineering, and transport engineering. The School also has links to the Bernal institute which is a leading research institute.<br>To graduate from the programme, a student must accumulate 90 credits, comprising 51 credits of taught modules and 39 credits of research work, as outlined in the table below.
