Creativity and innovation involves the design and development of products and processes that deliver value to the user. Our research investigates the creative design process and how this can be optimised to ensure innovative products are delivered. The end products must be easily manufactured, sustainable, and have the potential for recycling, reuse, or remanufacture. We use technology that enables 3D scanning and capture and reverse engineering. We also have a suite of CAD, virtual and rapid prototyping capabilities. Some of our research focuses on user-centred design, specifically looking at design for older people or those with additional support needs. We also look into the engineering design process and how it can be best employed to ensure through-life information and knowledge management, optimised decision making, systems integration, and successful collaborative and distributed design. At DMEM we offer MPhil, PhD, Industrial Doctorate and Engineering Doctorate (EngD) post-graduate degrees. All of these pathways lie within our Doctorate Programme, which is aligned to our key research areas: Creativity & innovation, Materials, Operations, Sustainability, Technology. PhD degree programmes enable students to undertake cutting edge research work for a period of up to three-and-a-half years. It's expected the outcomes of this research will represent a significant and original advancement of knowledge in the chosen field and will be published in leading science and/or engineering journals, as well as in the end of programme doctoral thesis. PhD programmes can be self-funded or sponsored by industry, the University, a research council, or combination of these. An Industrial Doctorate is an industrially-focused three-year equivalent research project and PhD education, conducted jointly by a private sector company, an Industrial PhD candidate and the University of Strathclyde. The Industrial PhD candidate is employed by the company throughout the time enrolled at the University, with the employer covering the fees.
