Applicants must normally hold one of the following appropriate qualifications:
- An engineering degree
- A science degree
- An Australian TAFE diploma or advanced diploma (AQF Level 5) qualification in an appropriate field plus seven years relevant work experience
- An equivalent overseas qualification.
In addition, students are expected to be able to demonstrate previous study or recognised prior learning in communication and planning skills, mathematics (equivalent to first year university mathematics), and science (equivalent to university undergraduate topics in chemistry and physics). Some basic knowledge of other relevant sciences including biology and human physiology is assumed.

The Master of Engineering Science (Mechanical) provides you with the foundations that will underpin ongoing professional development, preparing you for further study or for a career in an engineering-related field or in areas where these skills and knowledge are required. Mechanical engineering is concerned with the design, construction and operation of machinery. It applies the principles of physics, materials science and mathematics to designing, developing, researching, evaluating, manufacturing, installing, testing, operating, maintaining and managing mechanical systems. As a discipline, mechanical engineering is applied in a variety of areas including mining, minerals processing, manufacturing, the oil and gas industry, the automotive, aviation and shipbuilding industries, electrical power generation and distribution, road and rail transport, defence, agriculture, fishing and food processing.
