In today's world, industrial safety incidents account for numerous injuries and fatalities. The international Labor Organization (ILO) and World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that roughly 4% of the annual global Gross Domestic Product (GDP), or 1.25 trillion, is lost to direct and indirect costs such as lost working time, workers compensation, the interruption of production and medical expenses. In the last 15 years there have been many changes in the field of safety, including an emphasis on process safety and the associated areas of risk assessment and hazard analysis.
