The Department's minimum admission requirements are a four-year undergraduate degree with an average of 3.0 in the last two years of undergraduate work (or graduate work) at the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution and a TOEFL score of 90 (internet-based with at least 21 per section) or an equivalent approved English language examination where applicable. IELTS - 6.5, with at least 6.0 on each test band. Canadian Academic English Language Assessment - Overall 70 with at least 60 on each subtest.

The Structural Engineering program at the University of Alberta, offering exceptional expertise in steel, concrete, masonry, timber, and composites, has earned an outstanding reputation for leadership in structural design, research, outreach and code development.The program features CW Carry Chair in Steel Structures, Steel Centre and Supreme Steel Professorship, Nasseri School of Building Science and Engineering, Masonry Centre and MCAA Endowed Chair in Masonry Structures. Structural engineers design buildings, bridges, gymnasia, towers, and structures of varying proportions. Structural engineers are trained to determine the materials and dimensions of elements in a structure, so that the structure can withstand safely the expected environmental and service loads, and perform its functions in a sustainable manner. Leveraging both traditional knowledge and the latest technologies, structural engineers also play a crucial role in designing the resilient and sustainable cities of the future.
