Students can apply directly from a bachelor’s program (three-year bachelor’s degrees are accepted). In general, applicants should have at least a 3.0 (B) grade point average, or the equivalent, in their undergraduate work.
Applicants who are foreign nationals and those whose native language is not English must provide evidence of English proficiency. The following language proficiency tests are accepted by Rice graduate programs and will be used to assess English language proficiency:
- The TOEFL IBT or IBT Home Edition. A minimum score of 90 is required
- IELTS Indicator. A minimum score of 7 is required.
- Duolingo. A minimum score of 115 is required.
Prerequisite Courses
If a student does not have evidence on their undergraduate transcript that they have received credit for these undergraduate courses, they must take them as part of the PhD curriculum.
- Fundamentals of Systems Physiology (BIOE 322 or equivalent 3 credit hours)
- Cell Biology (BIOC 341 or equivalent 3 credit hours)
- Statistics (BIOE 440 or equivalent, 1 credit hour)

Our comprehensive PhD program trains students in advanced analytical and engineering capabilities, preparing them to solve challenges at the frontiers of human health and biotechnology. To encourage close collaboration between students and faculty and to foster quality research, our PhD program is limited to approximately 20 to 25 entering candidates per year. The typical course of study for a PhD in bioengineering is four to six years.
