Mechanical engineering is a highly progressive and dynamic field that contributes to all areas of modern technology. Mechanical engineers provide their services to industry, government, research, and academic institutions in capacities such as design, manufacturing, research and development, project engineering, project management, marketing, sales, quality control, testing, and customer service. Work in the field includes machines and mechanisms, vehicles for land, sea, and space, electromechanical devices, new materials, medical equipment, and electronic chip manufacturing. The mechanical engineering program at Widener is designed to give students a broad, application-oriented education. Students are exposed to all core areas of mechanical engineering, including mechanical design, dynamics and controls, and the fluid/thermal sciences. Students have the option of advanced study in exciting areas such as biomechanics, advanced materials, or robotics through technical electives, course projects, undergraduate research, or their senior capstone design experience. Mechanical engineering students can pursue a minor in other engineering disciplines, such as biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, or environmental engineering or with other programs, such as mathematics, business, political science, and many more. In addition, double majors with other engineering disciplines as well as a dual degree with physics are available for academically qualified students.
