At the time of admission, each student must have an approved PhD supervisor who has agreed in writing to supervise their academic program
Applicants must demonstrate excellence of background preparation and academic achievement in prior degrees and, usually, possess a relevant, thesis-based Master's degree with a minimum 80% standing. A Master's degree obtained without a full research thesis is normally an inadequate qualification for admission to the PhD program.
Three academic references. The opinions on academic preparation and research ability must refer to the applicant's demonstrated ability to formulate research problems and execute the research required to solve problems, as indicated by a Master's of Applied Science (MASc) research thesis or published scientific/technical paper. The references should also refer to the applicant having adequate English language skills to pursue a doctoral program, with all of its requirements, at the University of Waterloo.
Proof of English language proficiency, if applicable. TOEFL 80 (writing 22, speaking 20, reading 20, listening 18), IELTS 6.5 (writing 6.0, speaking 6.0). The Engineering Graduate Studies Sub-Committee requires objective evidence of English language skills. Technical publications that have been written principally by an applicant and published in refereed English language journals, a thesis written in English, or a personal interview with the Chemical Engineering Department's Associate Chair for Graduate Studies are also considered as evidence.

A chemical engineering degree from the University of Waterloo provides an excellent starting point to launch a variety of rewarding careers. Chemical engineers are at the forefront of technology, and their role in modern society is becoming increasingly important. Chemical engineers design, implement and supervise industrial processes where matter undergoes change, including in the pharmaceutical, pulp and paper, food or plastics industries, among others. We also play a major role in the emerging field of nanotechnology, with applications in the development of new materials and devices. We develop new processes to prevent pollutants from being released into our environment or to remove them after they are already there. We decrease energy use by increasing the efficiency in fossil fuel refining plants or by experimenting with new forms of energy generation and storage. Increasingly chemical engineers are also involved in the control, manipulation and production of biological systems, which have many important applications in the area of health care and food production. The professors in Waterloo's Department of Chemical Engineering are leaders in their fields. They will expose you to the latest developments and help you obtain a solid basis in the engineering fundamentals.<br><br>The Collaborative Water Program promotes the development of interdisciplinary perspectives on water. This unique program allows students to complement their chemical engineering training with core courses that focus on integrated water management. The Collaborative Water Program is co-ordinated and supported by the Water Institute and delivered jointly by 11 departments and schools from across all six University of Waterloo Faculties. By studying complex water problems as part of an interdisciplinary team, students develop a broad knowledge of various water-related fields, develop connections with peers and identify opportunities for interdisciplinary water research and innovation.
