Minimum TOEFL Requirements ibt/pbt: 89/575
Applicants must hold, or expect to hold before enrollment at Stanford, a bachelor's degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association.
Applicants from institutions outside the U.S. must hold the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree from a college or university of recognized standing. See minimum level of study required of international applicants. Students who meet the above degree requirement with a strong technical background in engineering, physical sciences, or mathematics are welcome to apply, a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering is not strictly required.
Applicants do not need to meet any minimum grade point average (GPA), and we do not release information about average GPAs of admitted students. As a guideline, successful applicants typically earn undergraduate cumulative GPAs among the top of their class.
Transcripts-

For instructions on submitting official transcripts, please see Step 4: Submit Official Materials.

Test Scores (if applicable)
The GRE exam is not required.

If you are applying to the full-time PhD or MS program for Autumn 2021, we recommend taking the TOEFL no later than November 20, 2020 to ensure that the scores arrive by the application deadline.

For instructions on submitting official test scores, please see Step 4: Submit Official Materials.

Statement of Purpose
In your statement of purpose, you should succinctly describe your reasons for applying to the proposed program, which may include:

Preparation for this field of study
Motivation for graduate study
Why our program is a good fit for you
Future career plans
Other relevant aspects of your background and interests
Interest in specific research or faculty members at Stanford
The statement of purpose should not exceed two pages, single-spaced.

Letters of Recommendation (3)
Letters of recommendation should come from academic (or professional) references who can speak to your academic and/or research background. Recommenders should know you well and be able to comment on your strengths and your potential for graduate study. Academic references are strongly preferred, and we do not encourage submitting more than one professional reference. However, it is ultimately your decision as to which references will best support your application. Your application will still be reviewed regardless of where your letters of recommendation come from.

We require a minimum and maximum of 3 letters of recommendation (the application system will not permit you to enter more than 3 recommenders).

As the nexus of top schools and programs in law, engineering, and businesslocated in the heart of Silicon Valley'Stanford stands at the center of the revolution in both technology and information age. Legal policy, engineering breakthroughs, and world-changing entrepreneurship all play out here in real time, creating unique opportunities, and special responsibilities. Often as a result of what happens in Silicon Valley and at Stanford, attorneys everywhere face novel legal questions about the application of law to new technologyand the impact of new technology on law. Resolving these questions requires adept synthesis of legal and engineering knowledge. Whether one's focus is net neutrality, patent policy, or any of a host of such mixed inquiries, Stanford's JD/MS degree in law and electrical engineering provides uniquely rigorous preparation. Through interdisciplinary course work, students learn to focus high theory into instant practicecounseling entrepreneurs, explaining abstract legal decision points to engineers, and themselves developing new legal technologies or frameworks. Inversely, students may be called on to explain highly complex technical issues to judges, legislators, and other policy makers. As they acquire expertise, joint degree students are guided by a unique group of alumniindividuals as conversant with law and technology issues as they are involved. Stanford Law alumni have long excelled as law and technology thought leaders. Not only have they helped create leading Silicon Valley law firms, many have served as general counsel to pioneering technology companies, including Microsoft, Apple, Cisco, Ebay, Yahoo, Oracle, and Google, to name just a few. Stanford's joint degree in law and electrical engineering echoes that collective experience.
