The MLS track in Elder Law is designed to provide those employed, or seeking employment, in a field that provides services to senior citizens, with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the growing field of gerontology services. Students pursing the Elder Law track take courses that permit them to understand the numerous laws that impact the elderly. The Elder Law track begins with a basic course in Property Law where students learn the fundamental legal concepts that govern the acquisition and disposal of real and personal property. The track continues with specialized courses that provide a thorough understanding of the legal problems associated with the elderly and issues of aging, the rules that govern the transfer of property at death, the tax consequences of the intergenerational transfer of wealth, and the laws that impact the ability to plan for incapacity and to make end of life decisions. As a part of the track, students will develop expertise in Social Security law, Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state laws and regulations that directly affect the elderly.
